Making a major detour here :) ……. after many years I am singing a Carnatic Classical Music song. I recorded it casually a couple of weeks ago with absolutely no intention of making it public…. was just testing how rusty my voice was for this genre of music…and the extent of corrosion is quite evident here ! However, I am now uploading an edited version of it as a teaser ( the full keerthanai is pretty long and consumes around 12 minutes and a lot more megabytes)… hence this abridged version. While presenting this teaser, what I have included is only some opening alaap, the pallavi , a mere suggestion of anupallavi, no charanam whatsoever, and a little smattering of randomly edited chittaswarams … This is an old Tamil Christian devotional song written several decades back and originally set in carnatic music format… I have used the old lyrics but not knowing the original raagam, I have composed the song afresh in Raag Keeravani which finds a significant place in both Carnatic as well as Hindustani styles of music. This is one of several similar Christian devotional songs composed by me in Classical Format almost 15 years ago…. Hoping to share a few of them here in the near future. Please bear with the jerky transitions of the edited pieces… I am not sure whether “Teaser” is the right word for this upload as this has the length of an average full song :). Anyway here goes…. Some info on Keeravani Raaga : Keeravani (pronounced keeravaaṇi ) is a rāgam in Carnatic music (musical scale of South Indian classical music). It is the 21st Melakarta raagam in the 72 melakarta raagam system of Carnatic music. This raagam is a popular scale in western music as well. The Western equivalent is the Harmonic minor scale. It is said to be borrowed into Hindustani music from Carnatic music. aarohaṇa: S R2 G2 M1 P D1 N3 S avarohaṇa: S N3 D1 P M1 G2 R2 S (the notes used in this scale are chathusruthi rishabha, sadharana gandhara, suddha madhyama, panchama suddha dhaivatha, kakali nishadha) As it is a melakarta raagam, by definition it is a sampoorna raagam (has all seven notes in ascending and descending scale).
